Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #32

This shadow shot is from the first lot of TtV photos I took earlier in the week. I’m totally smitten with the TtV technique and my Argus camera! Again, thanks Claire! I’ve been obsessively snapping anything and everything like a lunatic. I think I'm slowly improving with all the practice. I really like this earlier one though. Sophie was eagerly following me around the yard while I was playing with my new toy and she stopped for a rest in the shade amongst the flowers. And I wanted to sneak in a last shot of Soph for 08.

Well, this is the final SSS for 2008! Thanks so much to all those who have played along and I hope to see all of you and your wonderful shadows again next year. Also, thanks to all the lovely folk who visited my blog throughout the year as I dearly appreciate you popping in. And a special mushy thanks to those who left comments. I always enjoy reading them and some of you guys are so amusing! I feel so very fortunate to be visited by such kind, talented, witty and entertaining people. I feel even more fortunate to have become friends with people I’ve met through blogging. I’ll see you again next Sunday and I wish you all the very best for the New Year. May 2009 be filled with much love, friendship, happiness and peace. Oh and shadows of course! Let's not forget the shadows. Lots of interesting, crazy and fun-filled shadows! xo

Happy Sunday & Happy New Year!

Shadow Shot Sunday #31

Howdy! Today marks my 100th post! Ok, it took me almost a whole year to publish 100 posts, and with so many wonderfully prolific bloggers out there it’s not a huge achievement by comparison, but it made me happy to reach that number. Another thing making me happy right now is that I’m on holidays from work for a few weeks. Yippee! Due to this, for the next two or three weeks I’ll be having a bit of a bloggy break, but will still continue the Shadow Shot Sunday posts during this time. I expect things may be a little quieter on the shadow front this time of the year but anyone still around and wishing to join in, please do, as SSS will still happen each Sunday as usual. Also I’d just like to mention that if you add your shadow shot link to Mr Linky after Tuesday Australian time, there is a good chance that it will be too late to be included in a collage. Creating the collages and the links that accompany them does take me quite some time to do, and I do them whenever I have the spare time to. That spare time is often earlier in the week. With the time zone differences I’ve always been flexible with the times to post and link your shots, and that will not change, but if you’re keen to have your shot included in a collage I thought I’d mention for future reference that Tuesday will be the collage cut-off day. I’ll include this info and anything else relevant I can think of somewhere else on the blog with a link to it each week so any new participants in the future can simply click for the details. Better than boring you all senseless here with repeating the same waffle each week!

The four Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday. If you’d like to participate in SSS, it's easy peasy! Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or close to Sunday), then add your link to Mr Linky at the bottom of this post, and visit other players. Have fun!

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #31

These shots are taken of my newly acquired vintage Argus seventy-five camera that I recently won from the awesome Claire of the Naked Lady in Bloom blog. Isn’t it great? These cameras are perfect for the TtV (Through the Viewfinder) technique and I’m so looking forward to having some fun experimenting with it! Claire also very kindly constructed a nifty lens tube contraption for me. Thanks ever so much Claire!

Last weekend we had our first BrisStyle team market and it was a fantastic day. It was a great success and the event I believe exceeded all of our expectations. My BrisStyle blogging buddy Bec has done a spectacular post about the market over on the BrisStyle blog so head on over to check it out. It’s an informative and super fun read with lots of photos! The post also includes a bunch of links to other fab blogs that posted about the event. I was also going to do a post about the market but with everything so perfectly covered by Bec and many others, I’m now taking the easy option instead by typing click here!

Well, have a wonderful week ahead everybody and I hope you all enjoy your Christmas celebrations in the company of those you love, and surrounded with fabulous food. It’s funny to imagine so many people will be experiencing a white Christmas (or at least a very cold one!) while we here in Australia will be sweltering in the humidity of our scorching summer! Whatever the temperatures may be, enjoy and stay safe. xo

Happy Sunday & Merry Christmas!

Aerosol Buskers and Jugglers

"Is graffiti art or vandalism? That word has a lot of negative connotations and it alienates people, so no, I don't like to use the word 'art' at all" - Banksy (for a bunch of Banksy images go here and here and here)

Buskers are always out in force in the City this time of the year, taking full advantage of the massive Christmas shopping crowds meandering along the Queen Street Mall with their pockets filled with spending money. Musical busking far outweighs other forms of busking, so I found it refreshing to come across an art busker recently. An aerosol art busker at that! Surprising as I usually associate aerosol art with something as being done very quietly and very quickly and certainly not in the view of the public.

It was truly a fascinating process to watch and very different to other forms of aerosol art that I’ve seen.

Here's the completed piece, which was available to purchase. This photo doesn’t do the artwork justice. It was an intricate, vibrant and striking piece. I didn't buy it but happily contributed some cash to the bowl.

While on the subject of aerosol art, this is the entrance to the Jugglers Art Space courtyard area. Jugglers Art Space have been huge advocates for the ‘street art scene’ here in Brisbane for many years now and most aerosol artists will no doubt be familiar with the gallery and the various programs they run. One of Juggler’s regular and ongoing programs provides artists practicing in the aerosol arts access to their large open air art space to hone their skills, with assistance also given to produce large scale artworks.

The above photo is from the Jugglers Art Space website. The open air art space was closed on the day I visited. It’s advertised as being accessible four days a week, Wednesday through to Saturday (just not on the particular Wednesday that I happened to visit) and is open to all artists of all skill levels. Aerosol based paint can also be purchased on-site. That's if you're over 18 years of age. Which is the law in Qld.

Shadow Shot Sunday #30

Shadow ghosts appear as a shadow of sorts. They look a bit like Ecto-mist but are dark grey to black in colour. In photographs, it's easy to confuse them with natural shadows, so be careful with your analysis. They are usually extremely sneaky and evasive. When they are spotted it's usually out of the corner of your eye or as they are darting through a wall. They can also be spotted as a reflection in shiny objects and mirrors – (info sourced from the Ghoststudy website) I’m not really into all that spooky stuff but they do have a very interesting Paranormal Gallery to view if you feel so inclined.

The three Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday. If you’d like to participate in SSS, it's easy peasy! Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or close to Sunday), then add your link to Mr Linky at the bottom of this post, and visit other players. Have fun!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #30

This shot was taken in the courtyard of a cute café that I can’t for the life of me remember the name of now. I’ve carefully analysed the above photo for any paranormal activity and I don’t observe any to be present. However, I don’t observe the yummy mango smoothie I ordered to be present either. A possible explanation could be that I hadn’t yet ordered my mango smoothie before taking the photo. Or did I? Did I already order the smoothie and it had been placed in front of me before I snapped the shot and is now strangely not appearing in the image? Sigh. More details that I can’t for the life of me remember now. This can be a consequence of analysing every little aspect of ones life. It may lead to unnecessary confusion.

Happy Sunday!

Fun, Food and Fungi

Only three more sleeps until this exciting event! I’ll not babble on about it here because I just posted about it over on the BrisStyle blog. So head on over there for all the details and some pretty pictures.

I received two awards from my friend Laura of Any Occasion Boutique. For some weird reason the award pics will not upload so I can't display them here. Grrr. One is a Marie Antoinette award and I'm not sure what this award is all about but I appreciate receiving it anyways! It looks a little too classy for my unruly blog. Better watch my Ps & Qs now. Whatever that means exactly. The other is a cute award that Laura made and passed along to me as a thankyou for volunteering my services as a taste tester for Laura’s baked goods. Laura has just opened a second shop on Etsy called Laura Lee’s Tasty Treats and has sent me some of those tasty treats to sample so that I can provide feedback to her. I’m very much looking forward to the parcel arriving so I can commence my very important assignment! Can you believe it? I receive free baked goods in the mail AND receive an award for sampling them. Life is good! I’d just like to put it out there that I’m willing to offer my taste testing services to anybody wishing to send sweet treats my way to sample. It’s my little way of contributing to the community in an attempt to make the world a better place. Gosh, I may even be up for a Nobel Peace prize before long for my good heartedness!

And here, uploaded without any problems are a few photos I took of some fungi that I found interesting.

The last shot looks like an army of mushrooms marching 'round the bend. See you again on Sunday!

Shadow Shot Sunday #29

Dark Shadows was a Gothic TV soap opera that originally aired weekdays from June '66 to April '71. It was considered daring for daytime television when ghosts were introduced about six months after it began. The series became hugely popular a year into its run. Dark Shadows featured vampires, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel, and a parallel universe – (excerpt from wikipedia). The exciting news is that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are teaming up for a big-screen remake. Woohoo! With a release date given as the year 2011. Oh geez…

The four Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday. If you’d like to participate in SSS, it's easy peasy! Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #29

A set of shots taken of a council rubbish bin in Orleigh Park. The bin is enclosed in a big metal box, possibly to deter people from stealing it or idiots purposely tipping it over spilling rubbish all over the place. Whatever the reason I was happy to discover sweet shadows and sun spots cast onto the bin due to the design and patterns of the big metal box. I was much less happy about the smell of the bin. Ick!

Just a quick plug for a little art exhibit I now have over at Pandemonium Café (details in sidebar) called “Happiness is anyone and anything that’s loved by you”. If you’re a local and you’d like to visit to have a look at my paintings that would be lovely. In case you need further prompting, Pando's Café has exceptional coffee & oh-so-yummy food! And an all day breakfast menu! Oh how I love all day breakfast menus! I always feel this cool sense of naughtiness when eating breakfast late in the day. And that’s about as naughty as ol’ Harriet gets these days. I sometimes eat breakfast after midday. Yup. I’m such a bad-ass.

Happy Sunday!

Shadow Shot Sunday #28

Howdy! It’s been a while between posts. It’s just been one of those weeks. So many other things that I’ve needed to focus my attention on so I’ve had to neglect my blog a little. It will be more of the same this coming week also. I will always manage to find the time for the Shadow Shot Sunday posts. I’m too obsessed with shadows to skip them. Thanks to all the wonderful participants for indulging my obsession. I’d also like to mention that it hasn’t been a completely blog-free week for me, as I did a couple of posts over at the BrisStyle blog. So please feel free to pop on over anytime. We always enjoy visitors!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #28

This is a small part of the Myer City store Christmas window, which is a popular Brisbane festive tradition now in its 53rd year. This year’s Myer window display is based on the book How Santa Really Works by UK author and illustrator Alan Snow. It is one of the best displays I’ve seen in years. I think my squeals of delight may have frightened the poor kiddies that happened to be there while I was merrily snapping away. I took so many photos but this was the only one that featured a prominent shadow. A bunch of the shots will be made into Christmas postcard sets for my little nieces. I did that last year with photos I took of the display and they seemed to like them. It will now be our new tradition. Our tradition may not however last 53 years. I am thinking my nieces will probably be well and truly over it long before then.

News Flash! Elizabeth (About New York and The House In Marrakesh blogs), a regular shadow shooter (and the inspiration behind me starting this Shadow Shot Sunday meme in the first place!) has just had published a most charming looking children’s book titled Jane in Winter and it is now available for purchase right here. Just in time for Christmas! Woohoo! Besides writing the book, the multi-talented Elizabeth was also responsible for creating the adorable cover art for it! Congratulations Elizabeth!

Description: The story of Jane Mabry, an ordinary ten year old girl who lives in a romantic gamekeeper's cottage on the estate of the once powerful Mabry family. Jane's life is transformed when she meets Mrs. Parsifal and her adventures begin. This is a story for children, but Anglophiles and those who grew up in the 1950's--or wish they did-- will relish a visit to a vanished world. Aimed at readers aged 8-12 but can be enjoyed by grown ups too - synopsis sourced from the Lulu website

Take care, stay safe and see you next Sunday. Hoping you all have a wonderful week ahead!

Happy Sunday!

Shadow Shot Sunday #27

In ninja fiction, ninjas are supposedly able to become "one with the shadows" or, "a living shadow." In the manga, Naruto a special shuriken is named "The Windmill of Shadows." Also in Naruto, Shikamaru Nara possesses the technique to control a person's body movements once his shadow touches theirs. He can also manipulate his shadow into several shapes. Cool huh? I think I'd like to be a ninja!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #27

Yeah I know I’ve posted shadow shots of these critters before. I can’t help it! I love these lizards, so whenever I see them I feel the need to stop and take photos. They don’t seem to mind at all either.

I’ll not waffle on like I usually do (and don’t think I can’t hear the sighs of relief!) because more severe storms have been forecast to hit Brisbane tonight. So it’s very possible that lengthy blackouts will again follow, so I’m quickly drafting this post while I can and scheduling it to publish early Sunday. For those who don’t know, Brisbane has been smashed with horrendous storms during the week. If by chance my house blows away, I’ll at least find a little comfort in knowing the shadow shots will continue as normal.

Funkadelic Art Show 08

Here’s another art exhibition opening this Friday night, the very same night as the Reverse Garbage one that I mentioned last week. I want to go to both! Aaaargh! The Funkadelic Art Exhibition will showcase artworks created by people with disabilities who are members of a social and recreational support organisation based on the Northside of Brisbane. This is an annual event, with the first exhibition being held back in 2004. I’ve attended each year and have been lucky enough to snap up some amazing artworks at very reasonable prices. The artists all create with a variety of mediums, so there’s always a great display of different types and styles of art. Paintings, drawings, photography, re-purposed furniture pieces, sculptures, photograms, jewellery, will all be on display and available for sale on the night. Here’s a sneak peak at a few of the artworks that will be featuring in the exhibition. Shadow Shot Sunday #26

"Every picture has its shadows, and it has some source of light" - Joni Mitchell

In Peter Pan the main character loses his shadow. It snaps off when he leaps out of the window, which is slammed closed behind him. It is put in a drawer and later sewed back on by Wendy.

The three Shadow Gallery collages this week feature one photo from each participant from last Sunday plus a couple from the archives. If you’d like to participate in SSS, please do! How you may ask? It's easy peasy! Shoot a shadow, post it on your blog on Sunday (or near enough to Sunday), then add your link to the Mr Linky gadget found at the bottom of this post, and visit other players. Have fun!

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #26

The base of a big tree in New Farm Park. Wish I could remember what these big trees are called but I can't. They're very impressive. Those big trees. In NF Park. My brain has gone to mush today so I'll shoosh now.

Happy Sunday

Urban Wall-Capers (Part 3)

These are more samples of street art I found around the West End area recently. This last photo is of a cool piece of stencil art displayed in the window of Avid Reader Bookshop. Love that one! Partly due to my fondness for old clunky typewriters! The inclusion of the Mr Colour characters from the Reservoir Dogs film in the corner of the third photo I thought was an interesting addition.

An excerpt from Reservoir Dogs

Mr Pink: Look I ordered coffee. Now we’ve been here a long fucking time and she’s only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times.
Mr Blonde: Six times. Well, what if she’s too fucking busy?
Mr Pink: The words “too fucking busy” shouldn’t be in a waitress’s vocabulary.
Nice Guy Eddie: Excuse me, Mr Pink, but I think the last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.

(Apologies to those who are offended by swearing. I’m hoping my nanna doesn’t stumble upon this post)

Now onto something that my sweet nanna would wholeheartedly approve of. A favourite West End haunt of mine, Reverse Garbage, will soon be launching their popular annual end-of-year pre-Christmas exhibition. These are always fun events with so many amazing and unique art and craft pieces on display and available for sale. What’s particularly exciting about this one is that three of the participating artists this year are fellow BrisStyle team members. Included in the “Renaissance: a rebirth of recycled materials” exhibition are Helen Berthold (ruby red studios and ruby 2 go-go), Ali Chisholm (jellygnite) and Rebecca Hollis (wheresbeckybean). Congratulations on your successful submissions guys! I’m so very looking forward to heading along to this and checking out all of your creations!

"The exhibition will showcase both functional and decorative artworks made from 70% or more salvaged materials. The title ‘Renaissance’ was selected for its ‘rebirth’ and ‘renewal’ connotations. We’ve invited artists to breath ‘new life’ into discarded materials creating pieces perfect for ecologically sound Christmas presents" – blurb from the Reverse Garbage website.

Opens Friday 21st November at 6pm. If you’d like to attend the opening night celebrations simply RSVP by 14th November on 3844 9744. If you can’t make it along to the opening, fear not, as the exhibition will be continuing in the RG Echoes Giftshop during regular Reverse Garbage opening hours.

And I’ll plug the awesome BrisStyle Giveaway here again because it’s relevant to this post. Besides submitting pieces for the Reverse Garbage exhibition, Helen, Ali and Bec have also contributed super gifts to this awesome giveaway. So there’s another wonderful reason to enter! Which you can do so by clicking here if you haven’t already. Enjoy the rest of your week and see you in the shadows on Sunday!
